1. Vice Principal Nero—a tall, mostly bald (save for a few tufts of hair tied in pigtails) man with a very red nose who was tone-deaf yet insisted that he was a musical genius. Nero wore a crumpled brown suit and a tie with snail décor on it, and was quite the unreasonable, selfish man.
Note: If Nero was the Vice Principal of Prufrock Prep, who was the Principal?
[Vice Principal Nero is likely a reference to the Emperor Nero, a Roman Emperor whose reign is often associated with tyranny and greed. Emperor Nero allegedly “fiddled while Rome burned”. Emperor Nero was also famous for forcing many of his subjects to sit through extended theatrical pieces created and performed by himself. This is reflected in Vice Principal Nero’s awful violin recitals.]
2. Miss Tench—a regular gym teacher who “accidentally fell” out of a third-story window and was replaced by Coach Genghis.
3. Mr. Remora—Mr. Remora taught Violet in Room One, and was rather fond of bananas. He would eat one in front of the class, and recite very short and painfully dull stories which his students had to write down and memorize for tests. Other notable students of his included Duncan Quagmire and Carmelita Spats.
4. Mrs. Bass—a woman with long, black, entangled hair, Mrs. Bass taught Klaus and Isadora in Room One. Well, more accurately, she made them measure things using the metric system all day in Room One. She, like Mr. Remora, taught at the school for over forty-seven years.
Note: “Tench”, “Bass” and “Remora” are all different types of fish.
5. Coach Genghis—Count Olaf, disguised as “the best gym teacher in the whole country”, was an employee for a very brief period of time at Prufrock.
6. Masked Cafeteria Workers—a variety of workers worked in the school cafeteria, dishing up from enormous piles of food and handing out silverware. Such employees wore metal masks for hygiene purposes. The two powered-faced women of Count Olaf’s troupe were employed in the Cafeteria during the Baudelaires’ stay at Prufrock.
Prufrock Preparatory has now been shut down, and has been quiet ever since Mrs. Bass was arrested for bank robbery.
