L. S.’s seventh dedication to Beatrice.
In The Vile Village, Lemony, who reveals that he suffers from often-occurring nightmares, re-affirms the fact that he is wanted by the authorities (or some authority, at least) by stating that several people are “chasing” him.
He states that after falling in love with Beatrice, he was certain she would marry him, but “circumstances changed”; she read something in The Daily Punctilio and ended up marrying someone else. Beatrice most likely read about Lemony being a criminal, and some part of her believed this or was doubtful about his innocence.
At the time of writing this publication, Lemony might have been underground, with someone attempting to rescue him but failing miserably. He states that someone was attempting to rescue him by “writing letters to a congressman” instead of “digging an escape tunnel”. Snicket seems to change his location quite often in order to avoid ill-advised prosecution.
